Protecting Lives with Dignity, Compassion and Compliance
When Every Second Counts
Entering a care home is not merely a change of address – it’s a deeply personal decision rooted in trust. Families are entrusting the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of their loved ones to a dedicated care team, with the expectation that their needs will be met with compassion and competence.
But this trust brings with it a responsibility we can’t afford to overlook safety in a care home isn’t a secondary consideration – it’s a fundamental part of care. As people live longer and their needs become more complex, the duty to protect them becomes even more pressing. Many residents experience challenges such as limited mobility, fragility, or cognitive decline, making independent evacuation impossible without assistance. This is why care environments must be equipped to respond swiftly and effectively in an emergency.
In most care settings, the majority of residents, if not all, will require a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). As health conditions naturally change over time, these plans must be regularly reviewed to remain effective. And with a high volume of residents in multi-level facilities, a comprehensive evacuation solution is vital – every stairwell must be equipped and ready.
In a fire, lifts cannot be used – leaving stairways as the only safe evacuation route. The same applies when lifts are out of service. Without the right equipment in place, carers may be physically unable to assist residents safely, increasing the risk of delays, injury, or isolation. It’s not just about emergencies, without the means to transfer residents, many are left confined to their rooms, cut off from dining areas, communal spaces, and meaningful social interaction. This affects not only their safety but also their mental and emotional wellbeing.
In care, responsibility extends far beyond routine tasks. It’s about safeguarding lives in every scenario – including the most urgent. That’s where Evac+Chair makes a difference, by supporting a safer evacuation procedure, whilst reinforcing your organisation’s commitment to safety, accessibility and inclusivity.

Where Care Meets Compliance: Dignified Evacuation for Every Resident
Law & Legislation – Compliant by Nature, Compassionate by Design
Evacuation planning isn’t just best practice – it’s a legal obligation.
The Care Act 2014, the foundation of adult social care in England, places the wellbeing of individuals at the heart of every care decision. It calls for personalised, preventative and transparent care planning, safeguarding vulnerable individuals and empowering carers to deliver support that’s tailored to each resident’s needs. Effective evacuation strategies are a crucial extension of this.
The Act promotes early intervention and individualised support – key principles reflected in the development and regular review of PEEPs. Each resident must be provided with a safe, dignified means of evacuation, regardless of age, ability or condition.
In tandem, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, updated by the Fire Safety Act 2021, places a legal duty on the ‘Responsible Person’, typically the care home manager in a care setting, to ensure that all fire safety protocols are in place. This includes:
- Thorough fire risk assessments that account for vulnerable residents
- Implementation and regular review of PEEPs
- Safe, accessible stairwells equipped with appropriate evacuation aids
- Staff training in evacuation procedures and equipment use
